I recently started to listen to audio books. I started listening to a book written by a famous comedian about his life growing up and entering the comedy world. I am honestly not entirely sure why I chose to listen to this book which is read by the author himself.
There are words in there that I would rather not hear, but I continued to listen and in one chapter he starts to complain about the Bible. This man went to a "Christian" school where he was hit on the hand with a stick of he answered wrong and at another school he was read the Bible by his teachers. but they never explained it. The sad part is that he says it was because of these events that he didn't believe in a loving God or that the Bible was true.
I told a fellow Christian about what this man said and I told him that I felt like stop listening to the book. I got to thinking about my journey to faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. For many years I tried reading the Bible and it made no sense to me at all. I tried reading the King James Version and it seemed like a Shakespearean Play with all of it's big difficult words so I stopped trying to read it. I remember telling people that a person could take any book and claim it was from God. I wish I could go back and take those words back because now I know the truth.
I remember when I was invited many years later to Church and hearing the Gospel for the very first time. Over a period of time I started reading the Bible in the New International Version. This version seemed easier for me to understand and when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior it was like a light switch went on and I could really understand it better. There are still things in God's Word that are hard to understand, but the Holy Spirit will help us to understand the things of the Bible and apply them to our very lives.
My co-worker said to me that I should write a letter to the comedian telling him about the hope that I have in Jesus Christ and that this man could have the same hope as well. I have thought about the letter all day. I was thinking about even including it in a blog post in hopes that it would find its way to this man.
I am not sure if he would ever see it or even he would care.
This whole thing got me to thinking about John chapter three. You know where Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night and Jesus tells him that a person must be born again. Unless a person is born again they read the Bible all they want, but they won't be able to understand God's Word in a Spiritual sense.
We need to come to the point where the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin and we realize that we are completely unable to say ourselves. Then we must come to Jesus and trust in His grace. We come to Him by placing our faith in Him and what Jesus did for us on the Cross and the Holy Spirit comes into our hearts to indwell we who believe in Jesus.
I hope I am explaining myself clearly.
I am praying for this man that I mentioned and I ask that you pray for him as well. I am hesitant to say his name, but God knows who he is. I would encourage you to pray for this dear British comedian (who couldn't find any cheese in a cheese shop in one sketch that he did).
I think if I were to write a letter to him that I would tell him that God does love Him and He wants to have a personal relationship with him through Jesus Christ. I would tell him that Jesus loves your precious soul so much that He came to die on a Cross for your sins and that you could spend eternity in Heaven with Him.
That is true for everyone on the planet as well. People can find forgiveness of their sins and eternal life in Heaven by placing their faith in Jesus Christ.
I will continue to pray for that man and many others who have yet to come to faith in Jesus.
Lord,
Thank You for Your Word for it is the Truth.
We praise You.
I lift up that man I mentioned and may You bring Him into Your Kingdom.
In Jesus name we pray,
Amen.
