Handling Criticism

There appears to be an epidemic of criticism in our world today.

Some people feel that it is their job to point out other people's faults.

The media does it.  Talk show host do it.  Even dare I say, some people within the Church do it too.

Over the years I have been criticized about many things.

Mike you are too slow.  Mike you are too quiet.  Mike you need to speak loader.  Mike you are too picky.  Mike you are driving too fast.

The list could go on and on.

I am sure you have a list as well.  Not about me I hope, but about those criticisms you have received.

I think one the most awful thing about a critical word is when it is partially true.

The few things I mentioned about the criticisms I have heard are true.

Sometimes criticism hurts and it can hurt a lot.

Jesus told us that in this world we will have trouble, but He also said we should take heart because He has overcome the world.

We must remember that Jesus loves us and we must keep our focus on Him even if the world seems to be against us.

I am also reminded of some verses found in Ephesians 4:29-32 which says,

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of you mouths, but

only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,

that is may benefit those who listen.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day

of redemption.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other,

just as in Christ God forgave you."

The person who criticizing us may indeed be trying to help us or in their mind they think they are.

They also may be trying to hurt us.  Some people will try.

We must forgive them though and give them over to the Lord.

We should try to learn something from what they said.

Is there something I can improve on or is it just a personal attack on me?

Either way we need to forgive them.  Not to let them off of the hook, but because in Christ God forgave us.

Let us be kind to one another and forgive each other.

Let us try to build each other up in Christ and stop trying to tare each other down with our words.

Wouldn't be great if we encouraged each other as we run this difficult race here on the earth.

We need to be focused on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord,
Forgive those who criticize us and forgive us when we criticize others.
Help us to be kind to each other and encourage each other in our walk with You.
We praise Your name
In Jesus name,
Amen.
