Choosing Our Words Wisely

There seems to be a lot of anger and hostility in our world these days.  There are people who say mean things about other people.  Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in such things if we aren't careful.  It seems like people don't stop and think before they speak which can get us into all kinds of trouble.  There are times when people just like to stir up controversy with their words.

We are all familiar with the old saying that we were taught as children, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."  It is a nice saying, I guess, but it is totally untrue.  Words do hurt if they are not properly used.  Words can stir up emotion and feelings.  Words can heal.  Words can bring joy to the heart and a smile to one's face.  Words can calm a volatile situation.  Words can bring comfort to someone facing sorrow.  Words can stir up hatred and anger.  Words can draw someone into a conversation.  Words can send someone running away in terror.  Words can help and Words can hurt.

Proverbs 15:1 says,

"A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger."

What would happen if we used our words to build people up and encourage them instead of dragging people down.  What would happen if we honored the Lord Jesus with our words by speaking the truth to others with gentleness and love.

What would happen if political leaders spoke words of respect and kindness.  What would happen if you and I spoke to each other as members of a loving family.  Shouldn't the words that we use build relationships and point people to the Lord Jesus Christ instead of driving people away from us and Him.

May we choose our words wisely and in a God honoring way.

Let's think before we speak and build up each other instead of stirring up contention.

Lord,
Sometimes we don't use our words the way we ought.
Please forgive us and help us to build up people with our words.
May our words draw people to You O Lord.
Lead us and guide us by Your Holy Spirit.
In Jesus Name we pray,
Amen.
